Buckland Valley

Buckland River
Just next to our camp.
View from Mt Murray.

The Buckland Valley is between Mount Buffalo National Park and the Alpine National Park.  It is accessed from the Ovens Highway (connecting Wangaratta and Bright) by heading due south at Porepunkah along the Buckland Valley Road.  Once crossing the Buckland River, about 15km form Porepunkah, this road is a good dirt road and about another 15 km further on there are numerous spots to pull in and free bush camp (no facilities) next to the Buckland River. Conventional vehicles will have no problems with access to the camping grounds.

Back in the Gold rush era, 1850s, this valley was a hive of activity and the site of race riots between the Europeans and Chinese in 1853.
